Westinghouse To Supply 8 Turbine Generators In $50-Million Carrier Order

The Westinghouse Marine Division, Sunnyvale, Calif., has received advanced authorization from Newport News Shipbuilding, a Tennaco Company, of Newport News, Va., to manufacture eight turbine generator sets for the CVN-73, the sixth U.S. nuclear aircraft carrier of the Nimitz class.

The contract, after it is formalized, is expected to be in excess of $50 million. The turbine generators provide electrical energy for the weapon and electronic systems as well as vital auxiliaries to enable the ship to carry out its mission.

The turbine generator sets are similar to those built previously for nuclear aircraft carriers of this class, and production will closely follow those slated for the CVN-72, which was awarded in 1982. The generators will be built at Westinghouse's East Pittsburgh, Pa., plant and shipped direct to the shipyard. Delivery is slated for completion in 1986. The ship (not yet named) is a sister of the USS Nimitz, USS Dwight D. Eisenhower, and the USS Carl Vinson.
